The purpose of the Florida Panthers Youth Development League is to create a learning atmosphere which allows players to improve their skills and develop new ones. By providing two practices a week, the Florida Junior Panthers travel coaches will implement the American Development Model (ADM) to maximize age-based skill development. Our long-term approach allows us to grow the game starting with the 8U age levels and create an ideal bridge between recreation, high school, and travel hockey. This league will forge a path for opportunities and success for ALL youth hockey players. Each season of PDL has evaluation dates, player draft, game/practice/blackout dates. Each player also must have a current USA Hockey Certification number which the player must have prior to registration. This league is not open to travel hockey players who are currently on a travel team within ANY organization. No exceptions!
The Hockey Department put together and sent out a survey to all PDL players and families asking how satisfied they are with the program and anything they would like to see change. We had an overwhelming response from people and coaches wanting PDL teams to be able to practice together. Our current structure offers station based practices that focus on skill development that follows the American Development Model(ADM) which is great for our players. We will be making a slight adjustment to the ADM to create a better team environment that will allow the coaching staff the ability to teach hockey concepts and positioning to make a more well-rounded player.
We are changing this for the fall season to improve the development of our players. One week will be station-based practices as normal, and the following week will be individual team practices with two teams splitting the ice. The schedule will rotate back and forth each week. To keep costs down and achieve this goal, the week of team practice each player will only have one practice. The week of station-based practice each player will have two practices. We are confident even with one less practice every other week that the quality of the practice will be more beneficial and maximize player development.
